THIS IS AS MADHOUSE AS YOU CAN GET.

TALK ABOUT STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE. REDLINE IS A MOVIE THAT BOTH CARES QUITE A LOT (REMARKABLY DETAILED/EXQUISITE CHARACTER DESIGNS AND ARTWORK, UNBELIEVABLY SMOOTH AND GORGEOUS/BADASS ANIMATION SEQUENCES, A SPECTACULARLY AROUSING SOUNDTRACK THAT AWAKENS THE INNER RACER INSIDE OF YOU AND MAKES YOU FEEL THE NEED FOR SPEED) AND ALSO GIVES LITTLE FUCKS ABOUT DOING ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT IT WANTS TO DO (SPENDS MORE TIME SHOWING OFF ITS SLICK CHARACTER DESIGNS AND ANIMATING THE EVER-LOVING FUCK OUT OF THE RACES THAN DELVING INTO ANY OF ITS CHARACTERS AND/OR WEAVING A PARTICULARLY INTERESTING NARRATIVE, NOT THAT IT NEEDED TO CONSIDERING THE FINAL PRODUCT WE GOT + IT NONCHALANTLY SHOWS YOU SONOSHEE’S TITS), GOING ON TO CULMINATE IN ONE HELL OF A THRILLING EPIC FINALE, AND THEN IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED UP BY AN INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL AND HEARTFELT ENDING THEME TO CLOSE THE MOVIE ON.  

HOWEVER DON’T LET THE ABOVE FOOL YOU INTO THINKING THERE IS NO STORY IN THIS MOVIE. THERE MOST CERTAINLY IS. IT’S JUST SET AS THE BACKDROP TO THE INSANE HIGH-OCTANE FUELED BEYOND THE IMPOSSIBLE RACE AND IT IS HILARIOUS TO ME THAT ANY MOVIE, ESPECIALLY ONE OF THIS CALIBER WITH SUCH AN UNFATHOMABLY HIGH ASS LEVEL OF PRODUCTION VALUES HAS THE BALLS TO PUT THE MOST INTERESTING PART OF THE NARRATIVE TO THE SIDE AND PORTRAY IT TO BE OF LESSER IMPORTANCE THAN THE (GREAT) RACE.

WHAT MAKES THIS SO AWESOMELY RELEVANT TO THE MOVIE IS THAT THE SIDESHOW ITSELF; THE WHOLE DEAL WITH THE ROBOWORLD’S MILITARY, IS THAT THE PORTRAYAL OF THESE CHARACTERS HAS BEEN NOTHING SHORT OF HUMILIATING. BY WHICH I MEAN, THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO LOSE. THEY ARE INTENTIONALLY MADE OUT FROM EARLY ON THAT THEY ARE MEANT TO BE HUMILIATED. AND BOY DOES THIS SHOW IN THE GLORIOUS EXTRAVAGANZA THAT IS THE EPIC BATTLE BETWEEN ROBOWORLD’S FORCES AND… ROBOWORLD’S FORCES. YEAH, THE HUMILIATION IS FELT IN BOTH THAT NOT ONLY HAVE THEY CONSTANTLY BEEN THWARTED AT EVERY TURN REGARDING THEIR INITIAL CHOICES OF ARSENAL (ORBITAL DISINTEGRATION CANNON, TROOPS EN MASSE, MINEFIELD), AND BEEN FORCED TO RESORT TO THEIR MORE SHADY MILITARY RESOURCES (FUNKY BOY), WHERE THEY ARE PUBLICLY EXPOSED FOR BREACHES IN WARFARE CONVENTIONS, BUT HAVE ALSO BEEN ESSENTIALLY PITTED AGAINST THEMSELVES, IN THAT, AFTER HAVING UNLEASHED THEIR MOST POWERFUL WEAPON YET, MUST USE THE REST OF THEIR FORCES AND ARMAMENTS TO TERMINATE THE UNCONTROLLABLE SUPER DANGEROUS BIOLOGICAL WEAPON THEY HAD CREATED BEFORE IT CAUSES TOO MUCH DESTRUCTION.

THE MOVIE BASICALLY DROPPED A GODDAMN KAIJU/MONSTER FIGHT SMACK DEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RACE AND ONLY SLOWED DOWN A LITTLE BIT TO SHOWCASE THE OVER-THE-TOP SPECTACLE OF IT ALL BEFORE RETURNING TO THE RACE. WHAT’S EVEN MORE REMARKABLE ABOUT THIS SCENE IS THAT AS AWESOME AS IT IS, IN CONTRAST TO EVERY OTHER ACTION SEQUENCE IN THE MOVIE, IT ISN’T THAT MUCH MORE IMPRESSIVE, AND ARGUABLY PALES IN COMPARISON TO WHAT HAPPENS IN THE RACE ON ROBOWORLD. I AM NOT IMPLYING THAT IT IS WORSE OR ANY LESS IMPRESSIVE THAN WHAT WE HAVE SEEN UP TO AND BEYOND THIS POINT. RATHER, I CONSIDER IT A FEAT IN AND OF ITSELF THAT SOMETHING THIS GRAND AND OVER-THE-TOP COULD EVEN BE COMPARED TO SOMETHING ON A LESSER SCALE (IN TERMS OF EXCITING RACE VS. GIANT MONSTER FIGHT; BOTH INCLUDING EXPLOSIONS OF VARYING SIZE AND INTENSITY). HOW DOES REDLINE ACCOMPLISH THIS?

WITHOUT THE SPEED BOOSTS, I DON’T THINK THE MOVIE WOULD BE HALF THE SPECTACLE IT IS. NOT TO SAY THAT IT WOULDN’T STILL BE AWESOME TO WATCH, JUST THAT THESE ALLOW FOR A LOT OF WHAT MAKES THE OVER THE TOP STUFF TO BE SO TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGANN CRAZY LEVELS OF AWESOME AND MAKE THE ALREADY IMPRESSIVE GORGEOUSLY DETAILED ILLUSTRATIONS EVEN MORE JAW-DROPPINGLY INCREDIBLE. AND GOD MY OH THE END RESULT SHOWS THAT THE ANIMATORS WEREN’T FUCKING AROUND WHEN THEY PUT THEIR LUDICROUS IDEAS TO PAPER AND THEIR EXTRAORDINARY TALENT TO THE TEST (MOST NOTABLY TAKESHI KOIKE).

(SPOILERS + MUTE IF THE MUSIC GETS IN THE WAY OF THE AWESOME CLIP SHOW, AS IT’S ONLY HERE TO SHOW OFF THE SUPERB VISUALS AND FANTASTIC ANIMATION ANYWAY – WATCH THE MOVIE IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY!!!)

I HAVEN’T EVEN GOTTEN TO THE KILLER SOUNDTRACK, BUT I’LL LEAVE THAT FOR ANOTHER DAY. FOR NOW SUFFICE IT TO SAY, IN COMBINATION WITH ONE THE MOST STAGGERING VISUAL EXPERIENCES A STRAIGHTFORWARD MOVIE HAS EVER PUT TO SCREEN FOR US FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO FEAST OUR EYES UPON, IT IS FUCKING BRILLIANT. BUT EVEN WITHOUT THAT PERFECT HARMONY OF SONG AND ARTWORK, AND COMING FROM SOMEONE WHO FREQUENTLY LISTENS TO THE OST, I’D SAY IT IS ALMOST AS INVIGORATING AS WATCHING THE MOVIE ITSELF.

TLDR; JP OOZES COOL. SONOSHEE IS SUPER HAWT. AND EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MOVIE SCREAMS AWESOMENESS.
